Trough it’s history, Brac was ruled Romans, Venetia and Croatian – Hungarian monarchy. Rulers changed without major local historyc events, along with change of government in the region, but although uneventful, each rulership left legacy in form of different historycal monuments.
Dominican monastery and church in Bol are built 1475. Monastery today has unique botanical garden and museum with important historycal artefacts and baroque paintings. The greatest attention in the valuable monastery’s gallery is Tintoretto’s altar painting Madona with Child and Saints.The monastery and its church is located at the end of town on the east side. Behind the monastery there is a nice beach.
Monastery at Blaca hermitage is museum today. There is collection of astronomical instruments, ancient weapons, old watches and rich library. Blaca were established by Glagolitic priests from Poljica that fled to Brac running away from the Turks. Blaca is situated on the fringes of a long valley.You can get there with a excursion boat that will take you to the beach and you have to walk about 45 minutes to reach the hermitage. Or you can go with a car, but there is also small part which you need to walk. Blaca is a unique monument on our coast. A visit here is not to be missed.
Zmajeva spilja (the Dragon’s Cave) is ca. 7 km far from Bol, near village of Murvica. The Name Dragon’s Cave come from relief of dragon in it. Reliefs are monument to monastic life of Glagolitic friars in the 15th century. Cave is 20 meters long with four halls. There is Chapel of our Lady, reliefs of Madonna angels, dragon, moon and others were carved into the cliff. Contact us and we will conect you with a guide.
Vidova gora is not historical monument but it’s highest peak of all Adriatic islands.For the magnificent view on Bol and island Hvar across the channel that you will remember forever it is worth to come here. On the top is a small restaurant. If you can walk cca. 2 hours up to hill (780m ) go early in the morning. Otherwise take a car and you can drive directly to the top.
Some Croatian artist organized exhibition in Galerija Deškovic and Dva ferala. On main square you can see a fashion show, concerts, dancing nights. Ones a week is organized Fishermens night. You will be also overjoyed with Dalmatian klapa singing. Take a brochure of events in tourist office.
From Bol you can take boat excursions to Island Hvar ( Starigrad, Jelsa, Vrboska, Hvar, Palmižana ), Monastery Blaca, island Vis and Blue cave. You can also rent a boat with skipper and choose to go to island Šolta or Korcula, Trogir, Makarska or Split.
